At first, Kane seems to be a pleasant man who offers Adam both food and drink. In exchange for helping him, Kane asks Adam to do some work in his claim for three days. In return for his services Kane promises to lend Adam his mule.
However, Kane is a cunning madman who is interested in psychological torture, hoping to drive a seemingly rational man, like Adam, to murder. Therefore, he reduces food and water, humiliates Adam, and doesn't allow him to get any rest during his hard work.
In the end, he places a rifle between him and Adam to give Adam a fair chance to kill or be killed. Both fight on the ground and Adam destroys the rifle after nearly strangling Kane to death, but then he realizes what he is doing. He releases Kane and begins to escape, but his conscience demands him to take Kane with him in order to get some help for the cruel, dying man. Kane dies under the burning sun, presumably out of thirst and heat stroke.
