Mr McWhorter was infatuated with the then Inger Borgstrom. He owned most of the stores in a town in Illinois and was the richest man in the county. He'd take advantage of people who wanted to make a better life for themselves by offering to buy what they had. He paid particular attention to Inger's younger brother, Gunnar Borgstrom, who owned the general store that Inger ran and he wanted to buy it. He hires Ben Cartwright when he comes to town looking for work.
McWhorter makes Gunnar believe he's more appreciated so he spends most of his time in the tavern belonging to him. Gunnar doesn't sell the store to McWhorter because of his sister. All of Gunnar's friends are leaving Illinois to go to Canada, which he can't afford, McWhorter offers to buy the store again and if Inger marries him then he'll help out his brother in law get to Canada.
McWhorter finds out through Gunnar that Ben Cartwright has been seeing Inger and that Inger has taken a shine to Ben, fearing competition he fires Ben to get rid of him but this backfires and instead Inger hires him to work at the store and they declare to marry, this results in Gunnar selling the store to McWhorter because his dream of going to Canada is dashed.
Ben hits Gunnar when he finds out and McWhorter tells Ben he'll take care of Gunnar. After Ben leaves McWhorter hits Gunnar over the head causing a serious fracture to the skull, Ben is accused of GBH and possible murder if Gunnar dies.
Ben confronts McWhorter at the tavern and they fight, Ben doesn't get the truth from McWhorter but this doesn't matter since Gunnar wakes up and tells Inger what happened.
