Summary[]
Joe blames himself after a ricocheting bullet from his pistol blinds a young woman and decides that the only way he can atone for the accident is to make her his wife.
Plot[]
Tessa Caldwell is blinded by Joe in a hunting accident as Tessa, her father, and her brother are traveling. Joe leads the family to the Ponderosa, where Tessa is attended to by the doctor. The doctor tells Tessa her eyesight may or may not return. Time will tell. Tessa and her family stay at the Ponderosa while she recovers from her wound.
Feeling guilty and hoping to make amends, Joe offers to marry the young woman. Her sight eventually returns, but Tessa's greedy father wants to keep her recovery a secret; he'd love his daughter to marry into the wealthy Cartwright family. Tessa goes along with her father for a short time, but is too honest to carry out the ruse. Tessa releases Joe from marrying her, knowing full well he doesn’t want to marry her but would do so out of obligation.
